Chinese Brush Painting: Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services + Essex County Office for the Aging

The following online course will be offered as part of the New York State Creative Aging Initiative. The Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services and the Essex County Office for the Aging will communicate registration details to the older adults in their counties.

An Introduction to Chinese Brush Painting by Lifetime Arts

  • Westchester County: 6 Thursdays, September 23-October 28, 2021, from 2:00pm-3:30pm ET;
  • Essex County: 6 Thursdays: October 5-November 9, 2021, from 10:00am-11:30am ET

This 6-week course will introduce participants to the fundamental concepts and techniques of Chinese brush painting. Learners will study and practice brushstrokes unique to this art form, mastering basic techniques which will allow them to develop their artistic expression. The class will explore the beauty and meaning of “The Four Noble Plants” as well as Chinese landscape painting.

About the instructor

Jade Lam is a New York-based Chinese brush painting artist who was a community-based art instructor for NYC’s SU-CASA program in 2018, 2019 and 2020. Jade regularly conducts Chinese brush painting classes and workshops for older adults at community centers, museums, and other non-profit and private organizations.

Jade was trained in Chinese brush painting in the ‘80s and the early ‘90s in Hong Kong. Her art reveals a mix of Eastern and Western influences. She appreciates the simple pleasures in life and celebrates them through her art. She received a BBA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and a MIA from Columbia University, New York.
