Advancing Creative Aging in Arizona’s West Valley

Project Components & Partners

In this initiative, Lifetime Arts partners with the West Valley Arts Council to advance their creative aging program offerings in their region of Arizona.

Lifetime Arts will train two cohorts of teaching artists and community educators/public programming professionals in the delivery of innovative, direct creative aging programming for older adults (online and in-person). Executive coaching, teaching artist curriculum coaching, and implementation support is also provided.

Training Dates & Details

Lifetime Arts will deliver training for teaching artists over three two-hour Zoom sessions from May 23 – 25, 2022 and for Community Educators and Public Programming Professionals from June 1 – 3, 2022. Please find complete training details below.

Lifetime Arts Creative Aging Foundations: A Professional Development Training  for Teaching Artists 

May 23-25, 2022 from 10am-12pm PST/MST 

This highly experiential training is aimed at professional teaching artists who are interested in expanding their practice into creative aging arts education programming for older adults.

Participants will learn about:

  • What creative aging programming is and how it differs from passive entertainment and drop-in classes
  • The research that demonstrates why artmaking is good for people, especially older adults
  • The various creative aging program models, and the features of the arts education model (for both in-person and online program delivery)
  • The importance of embedding intentional social engagement activities into programming and curricula

Participants will also explore ageism and its impact on creative aging programming design and delivery. This training also features units on curriculum design and development, and will examine and demonstrate andragogical approaches to the development of skill-based, sequential instructional lessons for older adults. 

After attending teaching artists will:

  • Feel knowledgeable and confident about the program model
  • Have a working understanding of how to design a creative aging program curriculum
  • Be inspired to get started!

Lifetime Arts Creative Aging Foundations: A Professional Development Training for Community Educators and Public Programming Professionals

June 1-3, 2022 from 10am-12pm PST/MST

This highly experiential training is aimed at community educators and public programming professionals interested in learning to offer creative aging arts education programming for older adults.

Participants will learn about:

  • What creative aging programming is and how it differs from passive entertainment and drop-in classes
  • The research that demonstrates why artmaking is good for people, especially older adults
  • How ageism can impact the development and delivery of quality programming for older adults
  • The various creative aging program models, and the features of the arts education model (for both in-person and online program delivery)
  • The building blocks of planning, promoting, implementing, and sustaining responsive and inclusive creative aging programs:
    1. How to conduct a community survey 
    2. Forming strong community partnerships
    3. How to find, hire, and collaborate with a teaching artist
    4. Documentation and evaluation
    5. Communicating about the program internally and externally

After attending community educators and programmers will:

  • Feel knowledgeable and confident about the program model
  • Have a working understanding of where this program fits in their offerings
  • Be inspired to get started!

 

Registration Details:

The West Valley Arts Council is managing registration. Registered trainees will be enrolled as users in the Lifetime Arts Portal, where they will access training materials, Zoom links, pre-reading, resources, and trainer bios.
