My career as an art educator was based solidly in the belief that art-making can be enjoyed by anyone. I start with discussing belief systems around art making, how to handle the inner critic so the process is enjoyable and how to fix, revise or change the art in progress. This way the student can relax and enjoy the process more. Matching the skill level of the participants to the projects (with a bit of challenge thrown in), tieng the project into their interests and very specific feedback is key. Experience taught me to remain flexible, look for the teachable moment and keep learning. I use my training as a Life Coach in the classroom, working as an "empowerment agent". I have taught adult classes in calligraphy, watercolor landscape, papier mache boxes and drawing. (The drawing class was scheduled for 8 classes but they were having so much fun, we continued for 2 more classes.) And that's the final word - FUN! It's gotta be fun, or why would you want to do it?
